Electric pedal boats are a wonderful way to experience the beauty of the outdoors and being on the water in perfect leisure. There are many people who love rowing and other forms of exercise on the water. But there are also many who don’t want the effort. A relaxing time on the water should be that just – relaxing! That’s where electric pedal boats are perfect. Electric pedal boats are easy to set up and take care of – virtually no maintenance is required. Neither do they require messy fuel, since they are fully electric. The motor is built in, and the simple controls are located right between the two seats, so either you or your passenger can be the captain. Electric pedal boats are so simple to control that even a child can do it, and the seats adjust for maximum comfort. No matter how short or tall you are, taking an electric paddle boat on the water will be simple and stress-free. You can still paddle if you want to – but now, you don’t have to!

In the 1880s and 1890s, there was a brief flurry of activity in the area of creating electrically powered vehicles.  The world had not yet discovered the true potential of oil and for that reason it was originally thought that electricity would be the fuel that moved people around.  Small boats were part of the craft that had electric engines fitted to them, but most of those attempts did not meet with a whole lot of success.

The first successful electric pedal boat was created in the late 20^th century in the wake of the innovation that occurred in the late 70s in response to the raising of prices by the OPEC oil cartel.  For that reason, electric pedal boats have actually been around a lot longer than most people might initially think.  Nevertheless, work continues to be done on them to this day as there are a number of improvements that are still needed before electric pedal boats can truly be thought of as an everyday good purchase.

A lot of that innovation has actually taken place in this decade, with things like battery power upgrades, lightweight endeavors and better charge collectors all contributing towards better electric pedal boats.  As mentioned above however, these innovations do not make the electric pedal boat a done deal.  They are merely waypoints along the road to overall success.

Because of this, people are more open to the use of experimental technology.  This allowed electric engines to get into pedal boats sooner and that in turn has led to electric pedal boats being far more marketable than most other forms of electric boat today.  There is still a lot to do however and the electric pedal boat industry as a whole still has some hurdles to overcome.

If there is one single thing that could be pointed at as the main stumbling block to the electric pedal boat industry, it would have to be the size of the battery.  Batteries nowadays are still very bulky and heavy, especially when compared with conventional engines.  If the electric pedal boat and by extension the electric boat in general is ever going to be competitive, a lightweight battery needs to be developed.

Another issue with the electric pedal boat is its heavy cost.  Many electric pedal boats cost way too much money for their list of features.  However, the development of a mass produced lightweight battery for the storage of electricity will go a long way towards bringing the cost of the boat down.
